hi
the trick with running rtcw on linux ( to play not to host , that is )
is to install 1.4 rtcw as well as 1.0
reason i found and i think Twister put me onto it , is
1.0 will not fire up at first as that install dont have all the openGL
stuff so rather than trudge the net looking for stuff
install 1.4 which has all thats needed copy over the pak0 mp_pak0
and so on. then fire up 1.4 so all the graphics stuff is loaded
up then close it than start 1.0 and away you go.
although joing servers that have their mods in named folders
is an issue ( not with later versions of the game )
have to recon figure the home_path and base_path
with linux
download the linux stuff from downloads
then put pak0 and mp_pak0 on seperately from disk , memory stick
or direct from a windows pc ( click on network ) samba
with Ubunta is a breeze i must admit
for file sharing go to windows first and make a shared folder
in the net work set up. then open the ubunta network
in (places) it will recognise the windows shared folder
and then pass stuff easily between the 2
other cool stuff that comes on Ubunta :
FTP server and client , great for us that upload download
to game servers and so on just type in server details
and connect ( secure and highly stable )
a host of cd / dvd creator stuff
plus to add stuff to the repository ( install new stuff )
it has a easy to use search and install system
finds all availble i386 and Ubunta designed software
as with most linux packages your video and sound cards
will be auto configured and will work ! the amount of times with friends windows machines and sound drivers !! trying to download them
However *
DVD play back
with open source free stuff Dvd codecs are not included
out of the box so to speak standard will play ripped dvds
but not retail dvd ( the codecs can be found though
)
read this
help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormatsbut Ubunta users find USB stuff is just like windows
plug n play ( unlike other Linux distros )
so mp3 players ,cameras , usb hard drives , are a breeze
