i see google are release a cut price pc
loaded with google stuff for $200 dollars ,
and it is windblows free !!
running on a version of linux , so it has firefox as standard
and gmail as email account , it would be fine as second pc or for students .
i have mandria linux os (formally mandrake linux ) on a pc i built from load of old pcs that were being slung out from my company
its only 700mhz 180 pc133 (sd ram ) all i had to get was
a 40 gig hard drive on ebay for 10 uk pounds
( as the hard drives are destroyed by company )
but best thing about linux is its free !!
and if you have a router its plug and play for internet
( a usb modem and linux is to be avoided )
but for very safe internet activity its the buisness
and as the entire operating system only requires around 60 meg it flys along and boots up much faster than XP
( around a minute on my xp machine 3.0 ghz ) although there is
a lot of stuff on it.
gaming with linux is possible , but involved
ie, purchase the game ( windows version )
and download some linux .DLLS and install
them and the pak3 stuff etc
but newer games are being released also for
linux as well as win/mac etc
problem in past was nvidia graphics drivers
for linux but things are much better.
so if you get a old/ cheap pc take the linux plunge
as install stuff is manual done it prevents viruses
as nothing auto installs ! you have to manullly direct
a program to the drive and allow the drives proxys
to accept it etc , once you get the hang of that
its plain sailing
rich ;D
